According to CNET, Target now offers mobile coupons.
And, according to Target, it is the first major retailer to offer the ability to get coupons via your cell phone, although there have been coupon sites — such as Cellfire, Google, Coupon Sherpa and Yowza — that have been blazing this trail in the last year or so.
How it works is shoppers can register on Target’s Web site or text the word “COUPONS” to 827438.
The service sends text messages with links to a Web page that features various coupons. CNET reported that the program works with any phone that has a mobile browser and data plan for Internet use.
Target reportedly will replenish coupons as they expire, and the coupons are good at any Target but not at Target.com.
According to the initial story, JCPenney is testing a similar plan as well.
